Class Description:

Rajasthani Influence in Indian Fusion

After living and performing dance professionally in Rajasthan for over two decades Colleena’s vision of dance itself is through the lens of Rajasthani dance.  The ecstasy and joyful abandon in Rajasthani music and dance is influenced by sufi (qawwali) traditions thriving in the region and perfectly expressed through the spins found in both the classical and folk dances.  But where are the historical and physical meeting points of North Indian dance and Middle Eastern movements found in Bellydance?  In this workshop Colleena will share a few brief historical and cultural points about the context of Rajasthani dance, as well as her own personal experiences giving background to the particular fusions.

The workshop will begin with a short discussion, followed by IFF Level 1 warm up and training practices.  Students explore freestyle Rajasthani folk dance, followed by classical (Kathak) training exercises focused on Arm patterns and Spins.  Level 1 spins will be broken down and drilled, then concluding with a beautiful composition rich in North Indian aesthetic.

ABOUT INDIAN FUSION FORMATION

Indian Fusion Formation is a training program in Colleena’s unique fusion form.  This dance is rich in symbolism and detail, with deep meanings waiting to be unveiled. Stylistically speaking, Indian Fusion movement vocabulary is inspired by cultural dances of India and the Middle East (including its modern evolutions).  This dance bridges modern and folkloric Belly Dance vocabulary with extensive postures and spins of North Indian classical and folk dance, intricacies of eyes, hands and facial expression from Eastern Indian classical dance and draws in elements of Central Asian dances as well.  Woven seamlessly together, Indian Fusion Dance is both Ancient & Modern – expressing timeless qualities and values.

Live via Zoom (link will be sent via email)
