Class Description:
Nomami Mangalacharan Review
Choreographed by Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, this masterpiece dance is the first choreography which a student learns in our repertoire. Set in tal Ekotali (4 count rhythm) this item is an auspicious invocation dance which honors Lord Ganesh as well as Lord Jagannath. What is unique about the Mangalacharan is that it features all aspects of classical dance – both Abhinaya (storytelling through gesture following the lyrics of the dance) and Nritta (purely ornamental/abstract dance set to the rhythm). By learning this dance, a student begins to engage with the complex world of Indian Classical dance and understand the dance’s relationship to Indian classical music. Many aspects of this choreography retain ritual elements of the practices performed in the Jagannath temple (such as pushpanjali: offering of flowers) where the dance developed as a devotional offering to Lord Jagannath by Devadasi.
This online course is designed to support students’ self practice with reference materials. The duration of the course is up to each individual and is on a monthly renewal basis.
The choreography includes many techniques which repeat throughout the odissi style uniquely broken down by Colleena in a ‘stepping’ style practice.
This course includes high quality pre-recorded classes and practice videos
The pre-recorded videos imparting the steps and structure of the choreography are to be used as reference material for self practice.
